Le Diner de Cons is a 1998 French comedy film written and directed by Francis Veber. It is a cinema
adaptation of the theatrical play of the same name, also written by Veber.
PLOT: The character of Pierre Brochant (Thierry Lhermitte), who is characterized as a "smart, self-
satisfied, cold-hearted, intellectual" Parisian publisher, attends a weekly "idiots' dinner", where guests,
who are prominent Parisian businessmen like himself, must bring along an "idiot" whom the other
guests can ridicule. At the end of the dinner, the evening's champion idiot is selected.
With the help of an "idiot scout", Pierre Brochant manages to find a "gem", François Pignon, a Finance
Ministry employee whose passion is building replicas of landmarks with matchsticks. And so the
story begins...
An American remake of the "Diner de Cons" entitled "Dinner for Schmucks" was released this
summer starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd.
